Swing Chair

Project Prompt
I was tasked to design and fabricate a pair of identical chairs for a furniture design course I was taking as part of my Product Design MS coursework.
Inspiration
I used GravitySketch (VR) to explore concepts and forms. I became interested in capturing movement, and landed on the following.

Engineering
I imported the VR Sketch into Fusion360 and engineered dimensions and toleranced hardware.

I designed custom sheet metal brackets.

And a set of water-jet cut steel hangers.
Fabrication
I cut, bent drilled, and welded the frame from 1" square steel tube.

The brackets allow the chairs to be easily disassembled and "flat-packed".

Upholstery
I made four sturdy cushions. Plywood frame, MDF backing, recycled polyurethane foam filling.

Assembly
I fit the seats with paracord and then replaced each section with braided steel cable. The final chairs can be assembled with just two wrenches.
